VOICE OVER CAREER
Why Aren't You Booking More Voice Over Jobs?
'Speechless' Podcast Interviews Jennifer Antkowiak About Regaining Momentum

By Natasha Marchewka and Kim Wilson
Voice Actors & Speechless podcast hosts

We’re kicking off a new Speechless series and trust us, it’s for you if you’re already working, already booking, and still occasionally whispering to yourself in the booth: “WHY AM I LIKE THIS?”

We’re calling it The Next Chapter - conversations for voice actors who aren’t trying to break in anymore… but are still evolving, refining, and figuring out what comes next without burning it all down.

Which is exactly why our first guest had to be Jennifer Antkowiak.

Jen is booking. A lot. Jen is solid. Jen is also extremely honest about overthinking, perfectionism, burnout, and that weird middle space where things are going well - but you know there’s more.

Also: she brought New England-in-a-cup (apple cider + Fireball), so obviously we trusted her immediately.

Here's what you need to know.

THE REAL REASONS JEN'S BOOKING MORE
(Hint: It's Not Hustle)

Confidence Comes After Craft

Jen didn’t wake up confident. She studied with great coaches, heard “you’re in the pocket” enough times, and finally realized:

Oh… that was just me talking!

Relaxing into who you actually are > pretending to be what you think they want.

Perfectionism Is the Enemy of “Conversational”

  • Trying to make every read perfect?
  • Removing every breath?
  • Editing the humanity right out of it?

Yeah… stop that.

Clients want connection, not a sterile audiobook voice. Leave the breath. Smush the word. Move on.

Your Body Knows When You’re Trying Too Hard

Jen’s signs:

  • leaning into the mic
  • tense shoulders
  • obsessing over one line for way too long

Her fix?

Walk away. Laugh. Reset.

Pro Tip We Fully Endorse: Give 30% Less F*cks

Seriously. Walk into the booth and say:

“Today, I give 30% less fcks.”*

Instantly more relaxed. Instantly more listenable. Science. (*Speechless Science™)

Conversational Reads = Have the Conversation First

Don’t start by reading the script. Start by:

  • putting yourself in the scene
  • talking it out like a real human
  • then coming back to the words

If you just recorded an automotive spot, don’t expect to nail a warm hospital read without a reset. Your brain needs a costume change.

Sometimes the Next Level Is Joy

Jen hit a comfort plateau. The business was working but the play had gone missing.

Her next level?

  • bringing fun back into auditions
  • remembering why this felt magical at the start
  • letting the dream expand again

Save Your Wins (And Actually Look at Them)

Testimonials. Kind emails. Booking notes.

Put them somewhere.

Then when March hits and everything feels fake and slow: OPEN THE FOLDER.

Bonus move: use those wins as marketing posts.

Marketing for People Who Hate Marketing

Jen’s solution:

  • quarterly seasonal newsletter
  • original photography
  • real-life stories
  • OOO dates in a big box for skimmers

Clients love her email because it sounds like her - not a copy-paste pitch.

Warm Leads Hack (Steal This)

Check the “Meet the Team” page on the website of the production company you're researching.

Find a human detail. Start there.

TL;DR:

  • Confidence is built, not summoned
  • Overworking kills conversational reads
  • Your body always tells on you
  • Trying less can book more
  • Joy is not optional -it’s strategic
  • Marketing works when it sounds like you
  • 30% less f*cks = surprisingly effective
