VO AUDITIONS
How To Make Your A-B Voice Over
Audition
Reads Completely Unique

By Anne Ganguzza
Voice Actor, Coach & Demo Producer

When submitting auditions, it’s common to provide multiple takes.

But here’s the thing: casting directors and agents want those takes to be distinctly different. Simply starting one higher, one lower, or changing the speed slightly isn’t enough.

If your reads are simply changing melody or rhythm, you risk sounding disconnected and read-y  instead of versatile.

Let me explain.

WHO ARE YOU TALKING TO?

Before recording, take a few minutes to really analyze the script.

Ask yourself:

  • Who am I talking to?
  • What does this person need from me in this moment?
  • How can I make my delivery feel personal and engaging?

Changing the listener can immediately shift your read. Maybe one take is directed at someone excited about the product, and another at someone more skeptical. Your reactions will naturally change, giving each read a unique energy.

Adjusting your listener, your mindset, and your connection to the scene will make each take feel fresh and distinct.

CHANGE YOUR STATE OF MIND AND SCENE

You can also vary your state of mind or the scene in which your read takes place:

  • Be more relaxed in one take, more upbeat in another.
  • Imagine being outside versus inside. Project differently depending on the environment.
  • Consider emotional context — excitement, curiosity, or calm authority.

Thinking in terms of acting, rather than just repeating the same words, allows you to layer in different choices that make each read stand out.

PERFORMANCE TIP ...

When planning A-B reads:

  • Avoid talking to the “same friend” in each take. Change your imagined listener to shift the energy.
  • Treat each read as a mini scene, with its own context, listener, and emotional tone.
  • Think of subtle variations in pacing, volume, and engagement that fit the scenario.

Distinct reads come from distinct choices — in listener, scene, and emotional state. Every factor you adjust adds dimension to your audition.

By analyzing your script, imagining different listeners, and exploring varied states of mind, you’ll create audition takes that feel natural, intentional, and completely unique. That’s how you make your A-B reads shine.
