  Dressy elegance mingled with whoops and hollers for winners of the coveted Audie Awards® Thursday night at the 20th Annual Audie Awards Gala at the New York Academy of Medicine on New York City's Upper East Side.
  Major winners:
 - Audiobook of the Year: Mandela, An Audio History;
 - Solo Narration, Female: Bahni Turpin (pictured), for Yellow Crocus; and
 - Solo Narration, Male: Bronson Pinchot, for The Hero's Guide to Being An Outlaw.
  Created and sponsored by the Audio Publishers Association
 (APA), the Audies are considered the "Oscars" of spoken word
entertainment, and the evening was a gathering of authors, publishers
and narrators to celebrate and honor the winners of the industry's most
prestigious award.
  Following a reception, APA President Linda Lee noted the ever-growing popularity of audiobooks and that the industry is reaching
"new heights of production quality – clearly reflected in tonight’s nominees and
winners!”

  Bestselling author Jack
Gantos (pictured) hosted the presentation ceremony, opening with a
 hilarious recounting of his journey from prison to writing and then
narrating audiobooks. Gantos is best known
for his Joey Pigza stories, featuring a boy with ADHD, and the Rotten Ralph
series, featuring a nasty-tempered red cat.
  In a tearful presentation to the family of Edward Herrmann, the renowned actor and much-lauded audiobook narrator posthumously received a Special Achievement Award.
