That's VoiceOver! Gala Event Oct. 6
Features Top Pros, Training & Jobs!

September 18, 2011

(VOXtra) - A voice over show-of-shows is coming to Los Angeles with a stage full of top industry pros sharing career advice, plus contests for attendees to win actual voice over promo and audiobook gigs - and even an agency contract.

That's Voiceover! offers all this and more on Thursday afternoon and evening, Oct. 6, at the Pacific Design Center, 8687 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles (West Hollywood).

Proceeds from the event benefit the Alzheimer's Association.

Co-hosts of the star-studded evening activities are Joan Baker (left photo) - top voice talent and author of the best-selling Secrets of Voice-Over Success - and Rolanda Watts (right photo), talk show host and promo voice of the courtroom show, Judge Joe Brown.

"When I talked too much as a kid, my Dad would give me a tape recorder and tell me to go to my room and tell my stories into it!" Watts says.

"I made up voices for all the characters and even read the TV guide like I was Walter Cronkite! Now there are workshops, and events like these are a great to help build your career in a powerful way.”

Two panels of experts feature voice over pros, talent agents, casting directors and advertising executives (more below).

"The night will be entertaining and immerse voice over newcomers and working pros in practical, hands-on career guidance," explain event co-creators Rudy Gaskins (pictured) and Baker.

"And at a time when JOBS is the word of the day, That's Voiceover! brings the voice over talent together with the buyers and producers who provide the jobs," they add.

Gaskin's Push Creative Advertising and Baker have produced this show annually in New York City, last year at the elegant Times Center (see article).

This year, That's Voiceover begins in the afternoon, with an Audiobook Narration seminar at 1:15 sponsored by ACX, a division of

At 3:15, sponsors Neumann and Sennheiser present Choosing the Right Mic for Your Voice.

The main program begins at 6 p.m. with a Theater Reception, followed by The Business of Voiceover panel - a Q&A with voice over buyers, agents, creators and executives. Panelists include:
  • Wes Stevens, CEO of Vox USA,
  • Bruce Smith, director of voice over talent for Disney Animation,
  • Jeffrey Weinstock, VP and Creative Director for ABC Family, and
  • Vanessa Gilbert, president of TGMD Talent Agency
A follow-up panel, Voiceover as Craft and Career, features trainer Nancy Wolfson and AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris, plus popular voice talents including:
  • Valerie Smaldone,
  • Joe Cipriano,
  • Beau Weaver,
  • Cedering Fox,
  • Bill Ratner,
  • Carroll Kimble,

  • George DelHoyo
Also on the agenda is a tribute to the late Don LaFontaine, a WhisperRoom Audition Spotlight for CBS (more below), networking and cocktail reception, book signing, and the opportunity to meet the event's sponsors.

Three attendees will win voice over contracts, says Gaskins, ranging from a CBS TV affiliate promo to audiobook narration contracts for ACX, the new online marketplace for audiobook narrators and creators from Audible.

The audiobook narration contest is open to registered attendees who must submit an audition by Sept. 30.

"Plus, one person will win a Hollywood agency contract with the TGMD Talent Agency," Gaskins adds.

I've been told for as long as I can remember, that I need to do something with my voice. I'm 53 years old and am at the point in my life to where I'm thinking " if I don't find out now, I may never know if I could have had a second career with this voice of mine".

I'm so grateful to be able to attend today's "That's Voiceover! event. I intend to accomplish a lot in terms of networking and soaking up all the info I can in relation to the voice over business. In addition, I'm thankful that proceeds will benefit the Alzheimer's Association because I am a caretaker to my mother who has lost her voice to this terrible disease. I'm honored to be able to carry on my mother's voice for her by being in attendance at "That's Voiceover"!

I am very excited to be attending. Currently an LA resident, I have booked significant amounts of V.O. work in Utah, but want to learn how to break in here. This looks like a great way to do just that!

Joan Baker never ceases to amaze! She is truly my role model for a female vo talent let alone her as a woman. Bravo to creator Rudy Gaskins! Host Rolonda Watts I love your work. Alzheimer’s is also near and dear to my heart. All involved are my heros.

Finally a program that I can sink all my heart into! I'm on the edge of my chair with all at stake. It's American Idol but with love and charity. Hats off to everyone involved.

This is the second time that I will have attended That's Voiceover with Joan Baker, and again I know it will be fantastic. I hope it continues to be offered on a regular basis. Thank you for the write up. This will be the most dynamic show in Voiceover yet.

I am so excited for this event! I already have my ticket and have submitted myself for the ACX audiobook contest. If you want to learn about how the business of voice over really works you NEED to be at this event.

I plan to be at the event in LA and am excited after reading this article. I keep my eye on all the various VO events and this one is tops in my book, bar none. Joan is the best there is, and Push Creative kicks butt.

See ya in Hollywood!
